DID YOU KNOW?

This is Uruguay’s 50th game in the World Cup. Their first was a 1-0 win over Peru played out on 18 July 1930 in Montevideo.

After another emotional rendition of the national anthems, the captains meet at midfield and we're nearly ready to kick off.

Italy, wearing their traditional blue kit, get us underway.

Mario Balotelli makes a strong run through the centre of the pitch but Cristian Rodriguez pushes the No9 off the ball and regains possession for Uruguay.

Strong challenges have highlighted the first few minutes in Natal. Both teams are going in hard, looking to set the tone of the match early on.

Luis Suarez sends in his free-kick bending towards goal and Gianluigi Buffon punches clear.

Andrea Pirlo's free-kick doesn't clear the first line of defence and allows Uruguay to break on the counter-attack.

Pirlo's next free-kick is a deceiving one. The No21 opts to shoot instead of chipping into middle and causes Fernando Muslera to push the ball over the bar.
Italy have had the lion's share of possession in the first quarter of an hour but Gli Azzurri haven't been able to d much with it yet, especially from the several free-kick opportunities they've had.

In Uruguay's first strong foray forward, Suarez passes out to Alvaro Perreira and looks to cross into Edison Cavani but the Italian backline defends well and forces a goal-kick off of Cavani's first touch.

Balotelli goes into the book after putting in a hard challenge on Pereira. Should Italy go through, Balotelli will miss their Round of 16 match after picking up his second booking during the Group Stage.

Claudio Marchisio shoots from distance but Diego Godin slides to stop the threat before it reaches Muslera's goal.

Italy's No17 receives the deflected cross and shoots first time but he can't find he target.

Buffon stops Suarez's initial shot and denies Nicolas Lodeiro moments later making a double save.

Giorgio Chiellini clears Suarez's free-kick and Italy go back on the offensive.

HALF-TIME: The first 45 minutes marked by tough tackles comes to an end with neither side able to break through. Uruguay must look to score during the second half as currently Italy will progress to the Round of 16 alongside Costa Rica if the scores remain the same. Meanwhile, it is also goalless in Belo Horizonte between Los Ticos and England.

Uruguay kick off the second half as coach Oscar Tabarez makes one change, as does Cesare Prandelli.

Egidio Arevalo earns a yellow card only seconds after the half starts with another hard challenge, indicated the tone of the game won't be changing anytime soon.
Rodriguez connects on a nice one-two with Suarez to beat the Italian backline and is clear to shoot but he pulls it wide.

Pirlo takes a few touches, looks up and shoots from distance but his effort is rising and goes well over the bar.

GREAT SAVE: Suarez weaves his way through the Italian defence and takes a quick left-footed shot but Italy's No1 gets a hand to it and pushes out for a corner.

Immobile is denied by Gimenez's sliding challenge. They have been battling well on the right side all match.

Uruguay's captain heads home the corner and puts the South Americans ahead!

FULL TIME: Uruguay take advantage of their numerical supremacy and advance into the Round of 16 as the second-place team from Group D after a tense affair in Natal that ended 1-0 in the South Americans favour. Captain Diego Godin's goal proved to be enough as La Celeste move on and send Italy home. Costa Rica's 0-0 draw against England was enough for Los Ticos to take the top spot in the group.
